What duas should I memorize before Umrah?
The majority of the Umrah prayers are recommended and not obligatory. The most important to memorize before your trip are: Talbiyah (recited from Miqat to Haram), the dua at the Black Stone, the dua between Yemeni Corner and Black Stone during Tawaf, the Sa'i dua at Safa and Marwa, and the dua before drinking Zamzam. These aside, the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wassallam) allowed most of the ritual moments to be used for personal supplication in any language. Adhere to the du'a from your heart, be it in Arabic, Bangla, English or any language, Allah hears everything.
Here is the Arabic, transliteration, and meaning of every authentic dua for the Umrah period.
Dua 1: Talbiyah (from Miqat onward)
It is the foundation of prayers of the pilgrim, the Talbiyah, which is recited when he or she enters ihram and is recited throughout the journey until he or she reaches Masjid al-Haram.
Meaning: I am here, O Allah, I am here. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Truly, all praise, grace, and dominion is Yours. You don't have a partner.
Say this repeatedly from the time of Ihram until you reach Masjid al-Haram and commence Tawaf.
Dua 2: At the Black Stone (start of Tawaf)
At the Black Stone corner where each circuit starts, lift the right hand up to the Black Stone and say:
Arabic: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
Transliteration: Bismillahi Allahu Akbar
Meaning: In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest
Some scholars also recommend that the following is added: "Allahumma imanan bika, wa tasdiqan bi kitabika, wa wafa-an bi 'ahdika, wa-tiba'an li sunnati nabiyyika Muhammad ﷺ (O Allah, with faith in You, and with acceptance of Your Book, and with adherence to Your covenant, and with acceptance of the Sunnah of Your Prophet Muhammad ﷺ).
Dua 3: Between Yemeni Corner and Black Stone
Recite in front of the Yemeni Corner (3rd corner of the Kaaba) to the Black Stone:
Arabic: رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
Transliteration: Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah waqina 'adhab an-nar
Meaning: O Most Gracious and Most Merciful Lord, give us good in this world and good in the afterlife; and save us from the punishment of the Fire.
This is a quote from the Quran (Al-Baqarah: 201) and is the most beloved dua of the Prophet ﷺ during Tawaf.
Dua 4: At Maqam Ibrahim (after Tawaf)
Once you have completed 7 circuits walk to Maqam Ibrahim (or if it is crowded then past it) and recite this Quranic verse, then pray 2 rakah.
Transliteration: Wattakhidhu min maqami Ibrahima musalla
Meaning: And make the standing position of Ibrahim a place of prayer.
Pray 2 rakah: 1st rakah recite Surah Al-Kafirun, 2nd rakah recite Surah Al-Ikhlas.
Dua 5: Before drinking Zamzam
When drinking the Zamzam water, face the Kaaba and say:
Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا وَاسِعًا، وَشِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ
Transliteration: Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan wasi'an, wa shifa-an min kulli da'
Meaning:O Allah, grant me good knowledge, plentiful provision, and cure from all illness.
PLEASE DRINK STANDING, 3 BREATHS. After drinking, make du'a; Zamzam will complete the intention you make over it.
Dua 6: At Safa and Marwa (start of each Sa'i)
On the first ascent of Safa, turn your face towards the Kaaba, and recite this Quranic verse:
Arabic: إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِنْ شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ
Transliteration: Innas-Safa wal-Marwata min sha'a'irillah
Meaning: Safa and Marwa are indeed the symbols of Allah.
Then declare: "Abda'u bima bada'a Allahu bih" (I begin with what Allah began with).
Hold up both hands and say Allahu Akbar three times, followed by:
Meaning: When the word “Allah” is used alone it means “Without a partner”. All honor and glory to Him. He brings forth life and death, and is powerful over all.
Say this same dua on Marwa when entering.
Dua 7: Between the green markers (Sa'i)
For the men, between the green markers in the Sa'i corridor they will jog and recite:
Arabic: رَبِّ اغْفِرْ وَارْحَمْ، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْأَعَزُّ الْأَكْرَمُ
Transliteration: Rabbi-ghfir warham, innaka antal a'azzul akram
Meaning: My Lord, forgive and have mercy. Indeed You are the most Mighty, the most Generous.
Women walk without any restrictions and they may recite the same DUA or any personal DUA.
Dua 8: After completing Umrah
There is no specific dua after Halq/Taqsir. Many of the pilgrims say gratitude duas:
Arabic: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي بِنِعْمَتِهِ تَتِمُّ الصَّالِحَاتُ
Transliteration: Alhamdulillahi alladhi bi ni'matihi tatimmus salihat
Meaning: Praise be to Allah Who makes all good actions possible.
Common questions about Umrah duas
- Is it possible to do du'a in Bangla or English? Yes. The Prophet (saw) advised you to do your own personal du'a in your own words. Memorise Arabic duas in those places where it is specifically ordered; it is open beyond that.
- Do I need to memorize all of these? No. Memorize Talbiyah (essential) and the verse from the Quran to be recited while tawaf. Take a written dua book or app for the rest. A lot of BD pilgrims utilize Hisnul Muslim or the like.
- What's the most powerful du'a moment? In Multazam (between Black Stone and Kaaba door), inside Hijr Ismail, while drinking Zamzam and during Sa'i. These are documented from the Prophet's ﷺ practice.
- Can I read duas in transliteration? Yes during learning. But do work to read the Arabic — it is more beloved to Allah and will not get mispronounced.
