What Is Ihram?
Ihram is both a physical garment and a spiritual state. It represents the equality of all Muslims before Allah — rich and poor dressed alike. Entering Ihram marks the beginning of your pilgrimage.
The Garments
For men: two white unsewn cotton cloths — the Izar (lower garment wrapped around the waist) and the Rida (upper garment draped over the shoulders). No stitched clothing, no underwear. Women wear their regular modest clothing — any color is acceptable.
The Miqat
The Miqat is the boundary point where pilgrims must enter Ihram. For pilgrims flying from Bangladesh, the captain announces when approaching the Miqat. Many pilgrims change into Ihram at the airport or on the plane.
Prohibited Actions
While in Ihram: no perfume or scented products, no cutting hair or nails, no covering the head (men), no face covering (women during Hajj according to some scholars), no intimate relations, and no hunting.
Breaking Ihram Rules
Accidentally breaking a rule doesn't invalidate your Umrah. There are specific penalties (Fidyah) for each violation — usually feeding the poor, fasting, or sacrificing an animal. Consult your group's scholar.
